Thanks to the integration of artificial intelligence, smart health solutions represent one of the most important innovations in healthcare. But how are these developed in Europe? Who finances them? Which European projects are promoting their adoption? In this article, we will focus on the European project SHIFT-HUB, of which IPPOCRATE AS is a proud partner.

What is smart health?
Smart health solutions optimize diagnostic, therapeutic, and management processes within healthcare facilities. Among their main applications, we find:
- Electronic Health Records (EHR), which enables a more efficient management of patients’ digital health data;
- telemedicine systems that reduce waiting times through online consultations;
- artificial intelligence (AI) for diagnosis, analyzing radiological images, identifying pathologies, and supporting clinical decisions;
- health monitoring apps integrated into wearable devices, which help patients keep track of vital parameters.
These technologies not only make public and private healthcare more effective but also improve diagnostic accuracy while reducing costs.
The European Horizon program supporting healthcare innovation
The European Union (EU) has long invested in healthcare innovation through programs such as HORIZON-HLTH-2022-IND-13 (commonly known as Horizon), which funds projects to:
- develop new smart health technologies;
- improve connectivity between hospitals, doctors, and patients;
- promote the digitalization of healthcare across Europe;
- integrate artificial intelligence and data analytics into clinical practice.
These funds support numerous companies and research institutes across Europe, making digital healthcare a reality accessible to all.

SHIFT-HUB: the project connecting healthcare professionals across Europe and promoting smart health technologies
Among the projects funded by the European Union, SHIFT-HUB stands out as a model of excellence. The goal of the project is to create a pan-European hub dedicated to spreading smart health technologies by networking multidisciplinary stakeholders to develop innovative healthcare solutions.
SHIFT-HUB: key points
SHIFT-HUB aims to:
- facilitate networking and matchmaking between companies, researchers, and healthcare institutions;
- support procurement and access to funding for smart health startups;
- test new digital solutions with the involvement of over 1,500 users;
- evaluate 100 high-potential applications with the contribution of 300 patients during living lab events;
- encourage the adoption of digital solutions in at least 50 healthcare organizations.
IPPOCRATE AS and SHIFT-HUB: a winning combination
IPPOCRATE AS leads the dissemination of the project, ensuring maximum visibility for SHIFT-HUB’s results through targeted strategies aimed at specific groups. Furthermore, our experience has enabled us to develop gamification techniques to encourage the adoption of smart health solutions.
Scenarios and prospects for smart health solutions
The adoption of smart health technologies is set to grow exponentially in the coming years. The main trends include:
- greater integration of AI;
- the expansion of telemedicine;
- increasing adoption of wearable devices;
- strengthened collaborations between public administration and the private sector to accelerate innovation.
Thanks to projects like SHIFT-HUB, supported by Horizon’s European funds, the digital transformation of healthcare is undergoing a revolution that will bring tangible benefits to both professionals and patients.
